Another common sports injury is a torn anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. The ACL is one of four stabilizing ligaments in the knee and attaches the thigh bone to the knee bone. ACL injuries can occur through an over-twisting of the knee or from a direct blow to the knee.
Symptoms of an ACL tear or other tissue tear include tenderness, swelling, extreme pain and restricted movement. Often, a loud popping sound is heard when a connective tissue such as a muscle or ligament ruptures or tears. Treatment for this type of injury should begin with RICE: rest, ice, compression and elevation. Further medical attention can determine the best treatment. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help reduce pain and inflammation.
