The staff at CHKD saved my son after an attempted suicide by overdose. He was quickly admitted and received round the clock care while all of the drugs progressed thru his body over a couple of days. At one point we thought we were going to lose him. They made an exception and admitted my entire family into the emergency area including my 13yo daughter. She wasn't allowed to see him, but at least she was close by so my wife and I could update her.
It was the lowest point in our lives without question. They allowed one of us to be in his room throughout everything and even let one of us sleep in there at any given time. They couldn't have been more accommodating.
While walking in and out of his room, we'd hear babies crying fighting for their lives and think about how our son had tried to end his own. While it probably will never make sense, their compassion and open ears helped us accept what happened and to make plans for the next steps.
They assisted us in getting him admitted to the best mental facility we could find and didn't discharge him until that admission was absolutely certain.
We've never formally thanked the staff. Our lives were/are largely dominated by the multitude of changes and counseling that followed. There's nothing we could convey in words to adequately express our thanks and admiration for the medical professionals we encountered.
Most importantly, my son is still here and has found some genuine joys in his life. We know it's a long haul and he willingly shares his ups and downs. I feel bad for the people that didn't get the care they expected and/or deserved. No facility is perfect; however, the staff at CHKD were absolutely the answer for our family and we're eternally grateful.
